Map of pile dwelling sites

Dating text

The pile-dwelling settlements are dated by dendrochronological research, radiocarbon analysis and typological analysis of pottery finds. According to all analysis they can be dated to the period during the beginning of the fifth millennium BC and the second half of the fourth millennium.

Description

The pile-dwelling settlements near Ig, the south group, are located in the boggy meadows, by and in the river Iščica. Two of them – Spodnje mostišče and Strojanova voda – were discovered by Carl Deschmann in 1875 and 1876 already. Maharski prekop and Resnikov prekop were discovered in the 50-ies of 20th century and intensively excavated in the 60-ies and 70-ies, while the existence of Gornje mostišče pile-dwelling was proved in 1996. Excavations revealed numerous wooden vertical piles, ceramic vessels, jewellery, objects made from stone, bone, antler and copper, animal bones, and evidence of metalworking activities in some settlements. Several dendrochronological researches were carried out on these pile-dwellings from 1996 on. They established that the vertical piles on the land and in the river are still preserved in a relatively good state and that the cultural layers still holds several ceramic vessels and other archaeological finds, which is a very important perspective for the future research. / The pile-dwelling settlements near Ig, the south group, are located in the boggy meadows, by and in the river Iščica.
