Description

The settlement of Stare gmajne is situated on the fallow of the same name, next to Verd to the southwest of Ljubjansko barje. The site was discovered in 1992. In 1995, the co-workers of the Institute of Archaeology, Scientific Research Centre at the Slovenian Academy of Sciences carried out archaeological topography of the site. In 2002 and 2004, archaeological-dendrochronological research took place on the site. Thirteen trenches amid fields were researched. Among the more important discoveries, a wooden wheel with an axle, two dugout canoes and the remains of yarn stand out. In 2006 and 2007, several test pits were excavated on the site. An area of 30 m2 was researched. Among the interesting things found, are also well-preserved fire trails, a children’s bow, numerous remains of yarn threads, a large number of necklace rings, a larger amount of charred wheat grains, and the remains of animal excrements. Based on the results of dendrochronological studies and with the use of radiocarbon dating (wiggle-matching), we can place the settlement remains in the 32nd century BC. The site is partly threatened due to intensive agriculture. Currently, stratigraphy is excellently preserved. Also the piles are preserved. / The settlement of Stare gmajne is situated on the fallow of the same name, next to Verd to the southwest of Ljubjansko barje. The site was discovered in 1992.
